History Where do we come from?
Lezama Magalarte winery was born 20 years ago fruit of the passion and hard work of a farmer family who, as of today, have been producing Txakoli wine in Bizkaia for more than 120 years.
The story started with Nicolás Aretxabaleta, the man we can see in the old Magalarte Cottage in 1 in the picture nº 1925. It was his son Gabriel Aretxabaleta (picture nº 2), who decided to use his father’s picture as the label to bottle his wine in 1964.
This agricultural tradition continued until the 1994rd generation, Andoni Aretxabaleta, a passionate admiror of Bizkaia Txakoli wine and promoter of the denomination ‘ Bialtxa’( Bizkaia Txakoli
Producers Association). Later, with the support of the Basque Government and the Regional Council, he leapt at the chance and got to recover this special wine creating the Certificate of
Origin ‘Bizkaiko Txakolina’ in XNUMX.

Magalarte Winery is now run by the XNUMXth and XNUMXth generation: Inaki and Andoni Aretxabaleta, who are supported and helped by the rest of their family and some workers during the hardest workdays.
Iñaki Aretxabaleta (4th generation) started to produce his own wines in Lezama, and has a great experience in both, vineyard and winery work.
Andoni Aretxabaleta (5th generation) graduated in Agricultural Engineering from La Rioja university, and is currently finishing his degree in Enology in the same university.
Both of them are members of the Bizkaia Txakoli Tasting Comittee, which is formed by a group of wine tasting in charge of safeguarding the quality of all the wines belonging to the organisation `Txakoli de Bizkaia’.
